Start with who is riding
Children. Look for selectable speed modes so you can set the limit, a low deck they can step onto easily, and a weight they can pick up themselves when it tips over. Height matters more than age.
Teenagers and adults. Motor torque decides whether it climbs; battery decides how far it really goes; weight decides whether it ever leaves the house. Discs at both ends and tubeless tyres earn their keep on wet Northern Ireland roads.
Range: the honest version
Every manufacturer quotes range for a light rider at a steady middle speed on flat ground. Ridden normally, on hills, plan on roughly half to two-thirds of the headline figure. Our product pages give our own estimate next to the official one, because we would rather you heard it here than found out at the far end of a ride.
Where they can legally be used
A privately owned e-scooter may only be ridden on private land, with the landowner's permission. Not roads, not pavements, not cycle paths, not public parks — and the rental trials running in parts of Great Britain have never applied in Northern Ireland.
